Mrs. Dorothy Simms Toohey

Dorothy Simms Toohey 1916 – 2021 Dorothy Simms Toohey passed away on January 8, 2021 at the age of 104, at Oak Crest Village, in Parkville, Maryland. Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1916, she was the daughter of Dorothy Digges Simms and Andrew J. (Jack) Simms both descended from colonists who settled in Southern Maryland in the 1600’s. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Winter Toohey, her sister Emily Regina Simms (Sister Mary Rose, RSM) and brother Andrew J. Simms, Jr, SJ., as well as two children, Joseph Digges Toohey, and Dorothy Toohey Schultz. Dorothy is survived by her children Frank W. Toohey Jr., Mary Brent Buckett, and Robert J. Toohey. She was the devoted mother-in-law of Mary Lou Cain Toohey, John A. Buckett and H. Lee Schultz III; dear grandmother of Mark Winter Toohey, David Byrne Toohey, Meaghan Toohey Schiller, Jessica S. Scott, Andrew Winter Schultz, Caitlin Walker Toohey and Emmett Simms Toohey. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren. Dorothy graduated from Mount St. Agnes High School in Mt. Washington and then Mercy Hospital School of Nursing as an RN. On November 11,1943 she married Frank Toohey, an Army officer who after the war joined his family’s business, Dixie Manufacturing Company, a Baltimore metals fabricator. While raising their family, Dorothy and Frank enjoyed many friendships at the Baltimore Country Club. Dorothy was well-known for her loving devotion to her family and earned the admiration and respect of all she met. Like her mother she excelled in the art of painting and the card game of Bridge, both of which she enjoyed well into her 100’s. She will be missed by all, but her love and life lessons will be with us forever. A private funeral service took place on January 13, 2021 and a celebration of Dorothy Toohey’s life will be scheduled at a future date.
