Mrs. Josey R. Anthon
December 2, 1920 - September 9, 2018
On September 9, 2018, Josey R. Anthon, beloved wife of the late G. William Anthon, devoted mother of Jane L. Anthon, dear aunt of Robert B. Kershaw and John H. Kershaw. Josey died suddenly and peacefully at Pickersgill Retirement Community as she prepared for bed, taking off her pearls. She was the beloved wife of the late G. William Anthon, the cherished mother of Jane L. Anthon, and the dear aunt of Robert B. Kershaw and John H. Kershaw. Josey loved life and treated each day as an adventure. From her excitement to see how her flowers had grown each morning, to her reluctance to going to bed at night, she made the very best of every day, looking for ways to serve others, bringing a laugh to those around her, or simply being grateful for all of God’s blessings. Raised in Hamden, she loved the city life and all her friends and family in that close-knit community. She equally enjoyed spending her childhood summers in Upperco MD with her aunts, uncles, and cousins. She met Bill as a child in church, and they married in February 1944. For the remainder of the WWII years, they lived in Ashville NC, the only time she ever lived outside the Baltimore area. In the early 50’s, they built their home in Anneslie, where they lived together until 2010, laughing together each night with Johnny Carson. They loved to travel, but also enjoyed the simpler things of life: serving their church, spending time with family, the Orioles, gardening, shoes, all children, picnics, etc. Bill died in January 2012. Josey graduated from Western High School, an ace in math. She enjoyed working at Hess Shoe Store a couple years, before becoming a bank teller at Provident Savings Bank. Always exacting with money, she was an excellent teller, who enjoyed the interactions with her customers and fellow staff as much as the work itself. Her overriding love, however was being a mother, and when Jane was born 14 years after her marriage, Jane became her priority. Josey and Bill were unconditionally loving, patient but strict, and offered a stable, secure and conflict-free home that focused on God and education as a foundation for Jane’s upbringing. In later years, Jane became particularly close to Josey, with daily conversations full of wisdom, chuckles, and love. Josey was always kind, but also a force with which to be reckoned. She will be missed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ascension Lutheran Church, 7601 York Road, Towson, MD 21204 or Pickersgill Retirement Community, 615 Chestnut Avenue, Towson, MD 21204.
