Mr. Francis Joseph Feild

On March 8, 2013, Francis "Frank" Joseph Feild, beloved husband of Anne Sehlstadt Feild; dear father of Elizabeth Ryan, Catherine Mirch, MaryAnne Wolff, Lucy, Peggy, Francis, Jr., Rosemary, Richard and John Feild; devoted brother of Teresa Earp, Marie Ford, Msgr. Martin and Thomas Feild. Also survived by 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to Loyola Blakefield, 500 Chestnut Ave., Towson, MD 21204 Mr. Feild was born on November 30, 1921 to Rosa Christine Horn Feild and Frank Allen Feild in Catonsville, MD. Died March 8, 2013, at 91 years of age. • Attended St. Mark Grammar School, Catonsville from 1927 to 1935 and was a member of St. Mark Church until 1943. He graduated with honors from Loyola High School in Towson, MD, and graduated cum laude with a degree in chemistry from Loyola College in Baltimore, MD in 1943. He remained an active participant in the Loyola Blakefield High School and Loyola University Maryland Alumni Associations throughout his life. He completed coursework toward a PhD in Biochemistry at Georgetown University, but was unable to finish his dissertation due to a job transfer to Philadelphia in 1960. • Joined the U.S. Navy in January, 1943 and served for one month as an apprentice seaman, one month as a midshipman at Notre Dame, and then attended the Naval Academy as an ensign for 14 months to obtain a degree in Aerological Engineering (an old Navy term for meteorology). He reported to Navy Weather Central at Pearl Harbor as a Junior Grade Lieutenant and shortly thereafter received orders to report to Moffett Field in Alameda, California as an aerologist for the Naval Aerological Service. • Married Anne King Sehlstedt of Catonsville, MD on December 27, 1945. • Retired as a lieutenant from the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1950. • Joined Crown, Cork, and Seal Company (CCS) in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1950, where he spent his entire career. As a chemist there, he initially worked on controlling the raw materials used in bottle caps and closures. From 1951-1955, he formulated plasticizers and fillers for composition cork rods and discs and rubber liners for caps and was named Manager of Research in 1957. He went on to develop plastisols for plastic-lined crowns to replace cork liners, and his formulations were used world-wide as CCS expanded manufacture of plastic-lined crowns. In collaboration with CCS engineers, he also developed crown manufacture machinery to punch the crowns and apply the plastisol liners. • Retired from CCS in 1988 and continued to work as a consultant to CCS until 1993. • In 1950, he became a charter member of the Society of Soft Drink Technologists (now the International Society of Beverage Technologists) and served as president of the Society from 1963-1964. He was valued by his peers for his many contributions to the Society’s mission, related to the art and science of beverage technology for the non-alcoholic beverage industry. • Contributed much of his time to his local parish churches. From 1961-1971 he served as a lector and cantor for the Immaculate Conception Church in Jenkintown, PA. From 1971-1998 he served as an usher and lector at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen Parish in Baltimore, Maryland, where he also served on the Parish Council. From 1988-1998 he served as the Chrism Mass Coordinator for the Archdiocese. He volunteered on church administrative activities, including as treasurer, until no longer physically able, in 2010. • Survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Nancy Feild, and his nine children (Lucy Feild, of Boston, MA, Margaret Feild of Baltimore, MD, Francis Feild, Jr. of West Chester, PA, Rosemary Feild, of Philadelphia, PA, Elizabeth Ryan of Erdenheim, PA, Catherine Mirch of Fairfax, VA, Richard Feild of Perry Hall, MD, MaryAnne Wolff of Cary, NC, John Feild of Mesa, AZ, 13 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
