Mrs. Bertha Agnes Hohman
April 22, 1924 - March 8, 2020
Bertha Agnes Iglehart Hohman, better known as Bert, was born in Elkridge, Maryland on April 22, 1924. Her father, G. Norman Iglehart, was the gardener at Belmont Manor. He and his wife, Bertha Sewell Iglehart, had greenhouses at their home on Landing Road after leaving Belmont Manor. They were members of Grace Church in Elkridge, Maryland for all of Bert's developing years. She shared a special memory of Grace Church with us: "I remember starting Sunday School at the age of five in the old Parish House on the left side of the stage level toward the railroad tracks. I remember little tables and chairs. Mrs. Hastings, my teacher, and I were the only ones in the room and as we were leaving the classroom, a thought popped into my head...I believe in God." In high school, she knew that she wanted to be a nurse. She graduated from the Union Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. Her career led her to serve in many different capacities. She nursed in hospitals, doctor's offices, nursing homes, private duty nursing, research programs for the effects of smoke on firefighters, and osteoporosis studies which facilitated bone scans for bone loss. Her involvement with nursing continued until age 80. During World War II she wrote to servicemen. After the war, she dated one of the servicemen she wrote to and married William Christopher Hohman in October 1946. Their marriage lasted over thirty years until his death April 3, 1977. He showed companionship roses grown in his garden and together they were involved with the American Rose Society. They also had fun drag racing with his 1970 Chevelle Malibu with its four barrel carburetor and dual exhaust. She was very active with the Church of Nativity Cedarcroft in North Baltimore City since the 1950's. She was also a member for a time at Old St. Paul's Church in Baltimore where her parents were married and her husband built the shed in the garden at the church. Bert has two daughters, Kay and Lorraine, three grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. She has lived a multidimensional life serving the Lord and caring for others. Her volunteer work included the Govans Ecumenical Development Corporation and involvement in developing subsidized housing at the Epiphany House. While living at Christ Church Harbor Apts, she would protest war on the corner of Light and Pratt Streets with the anti-war movement, Women in Black. Reading and opera were her greatest pleasure. She enjoyed learning how the Navajo Indians used their language for codes that were not cracked during World War II. She continued to live in Baltimore, Maryland for another thirty years before moving to Anne Arundel County twelve years ago. Interment private. Memorial service details will be posted when available.
