Sister Marylita Friia, SSND

August 12, 1931 - February 11, 2022

On February 11, 2022, Sister Marylita Friia, SSND, beloved member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, dear daughter of the late Michael Friia and Nellie Conoscenti Friia, dear sister of Anthony Friia and his wife Beatrice. Also survived by nephews Gregory and Michael Friia (and wife Lynnlee Friia) and beloved great-nephew Bryan Friia and other extended family members. All of these she loved and touched deeply. A native of Baltimore, Sister Marylita was a life-long educator who made a tremendous impact to the lives of many others. She taught at Notre Dame Preparatory School and what is now Notre Dame of Maryland University. She was a teacher and then principal at Archbishop Keough High School and taught chemistry at the Essex campus of the Community College of Baltimore County. Sister Marylita continued her commitment to education as Director of religious education at St. Mark in Fallston and St. Joseph in Odenton. She was a pastoral associate at St. Michael in Poplar Springs and coordinator of sacraments and adult education at St. Bernadette in Severn. She served as director of religious education at St. Charles in Pikesville and ministered in adult religious education for Our Lady of Good Counsel and the Catholic Community of South Baltimore, and later she was also a medical claims coordinator for the Atlantic-Midwest Province of SSND. Sister Marylita was a gifted story teller, especially when recounting stories about her family’s history. She loved traveling to different places, including visiting family members in Italy, and she enjoyed a good joke. All who knew her loved her dearly and will never forget her wit, kindness, faith and devotion. A Memorial Mass will be scheduled at a later date. Sister Friia donated her body to the Anatomy Board of Maryland. Contributions in memory of Sister Marylita Friia, may be made to the School Sisters of Notre Dame, 6401 N.
